Only 48 percent of India's railway network is electrified

Even 65 years after railways started electrification, less than half of its locomotives run on electricity. The majority are diesel locos called WDM2, based on an American design of 1960s’ vintage. The Prime Minister’s Office has reportedly told the railway ministry not to go for a sudden and complete switchover to electric engines.
